Jazz Soirees are thriving outside the traditional confines of L.A. clubs and concert halls, from Pico Rivera to Northridge and even in Orange County and Santa Barbara. This is by no means a complete list. Most of the following, it should be noted, require reservations. Many, particularly "Jazz at the 'A' Frame" and "Jazz in the Garden," are family friendly.

David A. Abell Memorial Jazz Salons

Started in 2003 in the home of Century City attorney Ralph Ehrenpreis, who is director of programs for Friends of Jazz at UCLA, before moving to the Fowler Museum in 2006. Concerts, which usually feature musicians from outside L.A., are followed by an interview with the artist and an audience Q&A.
Type of jazz: Modern mainstream. Guests: Shelly Berg, George Cables, Uri Caine, John Clayton, Ray Drummond, Lorraine Feather, John Heard, John Hendricks, Fred Hersch, Lee Konitz, Harold Mabern, Roy McCurdy, Mulgrew Miller, Martial Solal, Jessica Williams. Frequency: Four to six times a year. Time: Sunday, 1-4 p.m. Admission: $18 (concert only); $45 (preferred seating); $9 (students). Amenities: Outdoor cocktail reception. Location: Lenart Auditorium, UCLA Fowler Museum, Westwood.
