Friends of Jazz at UCLA Community Outreach

Fernando Pullum Performing Arts High School UCLA Campus Visit
December 1, 2009

The Friends of Jazz at UCLA, UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology and UCLA School of the Arts & Architecture co-hosted a campus visit on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 for over 125 students and several teachers, administrators and parents from Fernando Pullum Performing Arts High School. The students were treated to a campus tour, admissions advising presentations, class visits, and dinner with current students. The day culminated with the UCLA Big Band Concert at Schoenberg Hall where the students heard performances by the UCLA Jazz Orchestra, Latin Jazz Ensemble, and Contemporary Jazz Ensemble.

The visit is one component of a brand new outreach partnership between Friends of Jazz and the newly-opened performing arts school that is designed to begin creating a pipeline for underrepresented minority jazz studies students in Los Angeles to UCLA. Another aspect of the partnership involves students from UCLA’s Jazz Studies Program visiting the school weekly to provide instrument coaching and mentoring. Future components of the partnership will include an on-campus performance opportunity for the Pullum students, a recording session, and industry-related workshops. Photo slideshow.

A big thank you to Chris Waterman (Dean, UCLA School of Arts & Architecture), Jacqueline DjeDje (Chair, UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology), Kenny Burrell (Director, UCLA Jazz Studies and Executive Director, Friends of Jazz at UCLA), Tony Tolbert (board member, Friends of Jazz at UCLA) and the many UCLA staff members who helped to coordinate the visit, as well as take time out of the their day to assist and spend some time with the students.

Friends of Jazz at UCLA provides financial support and other resources to advance the study of jazz at UCLA. The organization's core objectives include:

  • Supporting the growing needs of the UCLA Jazz Studies program with respect to
